'If Rohit goes on to achieve...' - Dinesh Karthik's analysis on split captaincy in Indian team

Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper, will lead the team for the first time in the 50-over World Cup later this year and it remains to be seen if the team could clinch the title, given that it would be one of the highly-competitive ones going around. However, the right-handed batter, after failing to lift the 20-20 World Cup in 2022, would be thriving to make it up this time and make India proud once again.

Dinesh Karthik, the Indian wicketkeeper, opened up on Rohit’s captaincy and said that the Indian think tank must not discuss split captaincy, given the multinational tournament is just months away. Further, the wicketkeeper said that Rohit has been brilliant so far and the situation would present itself for a change if he and his team fails to do something special in the showpiece event.

Karthik opened up on Hardik Pandya’s captaincy and his future as the potential captain of the Men in Blue, claiming that the allrounder has fared out well as the leader of the team so far. Further, the Indian wicketkeeper said that it would be vital for the think tank to keep such thoughts after the conclusion of the 50-over World Cup.

If the case presents itself, why not?: Dinesh Karthik

India would hope to turn things around in the 50-over World Cup in 2023 and it would be a huge ask for the Indian team given that they have not been enjoying a great sun in multinational tournaments of late. If at all the Men in Blue reach the summit clash of the tournament, it could come as a blessing for the team.

“If the case presents itself, why not? But right now, it is not right for me to say for two reasons. One, India are only playing three T20s after this until the 2023 World Cup, they face the West Indies after the Indian T20 League. Once that tournament is done, I think we will know exactly where things stand,” Karthik was quoted as saying.

“If Rohit Sharma’s team doesn’t go on to do something special there, we could very well see a chance of split captaincy, I guess the opportunity will present itself at that point of time. Whereas if Rohit goes on to achieve something special, we will all like to think differently and give him a crack at the 2024 T20 World Cup if he himself is willing to play that,” he added.
