Last year, after the conclusion of the IPL 2022, a fresh set of TV and online streaming rights was sold for the 2023-2027 cycle. For the first time in the history of the league, the TV and online streaming rights were sold separately. Before this, the broadcaster, who held the TV rights also held the online streaming rights. However, the online streaming rights were sold to a different platform.

After the rights selling was confirmed, they were valued at 48,390 crores INR combined. Breaking it down, it was 100 crores INR per game, leaving behind the likes of Premier League (Football), Major League Baseball, and others. Cricket’s cash-rich league is only behind NFL (National Football League).

It won’t be long before IPL leaves behind NFL: Lalit Modi

Meanwhile, ahead of the 1000th IPL game, former chair and IPL founder Lalit Modi spoke on the journey of the tournament.

“For me it is a dream and it’s very personal,” he hummed.

“I wish to thank them (fans, players, stakeholders and regulators) all for their support. Thank you for making the IPL what it is,” Modi told Cricbuzz in a whirring voice as the celebrations took off at the Wankhede on Sunday night.

“It’s really an emotional time. It is amazing to see the IPL grow so fast and become the second biggest league in the world in terms of value. In terms of viewership, it is No 1. More important than that is the number of youngsters we have seen in the landscape of the country. And the infrastructure that has come up across India. That is the byproduct of the IPL’s growth.”

“It’s all because of the fans and how they have embraced the league. It’s only looking like it is growing from strength to strength. It won’t be long before the IPL becomes the No. 1 league in any sport in the world. It is behind the NFL now, No. 2 currently. Going by the rate and speed of the IPL’s growth, that day is not too far,” he reiterated.
