On the first day of the Test, India defeated Australia for 219 after losing the toss. India jumped off to a 187-run lead due to major contributions from Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana while opening the batting. Richa Ghosh and Jemimah Rodrigues within the middle order, Deepti Sharma, and Pooja Vastrakar also contributed massively to the first-innings lead.

On the third day of play, Australia mounted a comeback led by Tahlia McGrath, who attained her 2nd fifty of the contest as the No. 4 ranking in Australia. A few crucial wickets were taken by Harmanpreet Kaur in the penultimate day’s last session.

Then, in today’s morning session, the Indian spinners claimed the final five wickets for a mere 28 runs. Shafali Verma hit a boundary in the opening over of the 75-run chase, but was out of luck. After that point, there were not many problems that troubled the Indian batters at the crease. Richa Ghosh struggled at the wicket as she played a number of poor shots. The batter was dropped on zero, and hit a few inconsistent boundaries.

She finally was dismissed while trying to score quick runs and finish off the game. But before that she and Mandhana formed a partnership that would kill the game altogether. Fittingly, the elegant vice-captain hit the winning runs with an exquisite shot.

Harmanpreet Kaur after India’s epic victory

The Indian Women’s team skipper spoke after the side’s win against Australia Women. She said, “It’s a reward for all the hard work. Credit goes to all our support staff, especially our bowling and batting coach. We tried to keep things simple. It’s a reward for all the hard work. If we can play some positive cricket, it can really help us. We put Richa up, we know what damage she can do. We didn’t want to play defensive cricket. The partnership helped them to put a decent total on the board.”

Harmanpreet Kaur thanked everyone for their efforts as she said, “I want to thank BCCI and also the selectors for backing us. When everyone works together, you get positive results. Hopefully we get many more Test matches. Thanks to the crowd as well who came out to support us.”
