‘He wanted to quit’- Indian Cricket Board treasurer sheds light of Virat Kohli’s captaincy saga, rubbishes claims of sidelining him
Virat Kohli is currently on a sabbatical from cricket and is looking to get back in form.
Virat Kohli is arguably the most popular cricketer in the world. Thus, he always garners attention irrespective of the form he’s in. His unceremonious removal from the captaincy spot seven months ago created is still talked about among cricket circles.
In what can be called a cat and mouse game between Kohli and the Indian Cricket Board, the entire development seemed bizarre. Both parties looked like washing their dirty laundries in public as they came up with their own version of
Kohli speaking in a press conference said that he only stepped down from the T20Is captaincy but was removed from the ODI captaincy as well. The Indian Cricket Board later declined to comment on the matter.
Virat Kohli’s career has gone downhill ever since the captaincy saga took place. In the last three years, the star India batter has failed to score a century.
Recently Indian Cricket Board treasurer Arun Dhumal has rubbished claims that the board is trying to sideline Kohli.
“See… as far as Virat is concerned, he is not a simple player. He is a great and his contribution to Indian cricket is unparalleled. It is outstanding. So, such conversations (the board is trying to sideline Kohli) keep taking place in the media and it does not affect us. We want that he returns to form soon, and as far as team selection is concerned, we leave it to selectors. It is their call as to how they want to go about it,” Dhumal told Vimal Kumar, a sports journalist on his YouTube channel.
“As far as the issue of captaincy is concerned, it was his call. He decided that mujhe ab nahi karni hai captaincy (that I don’t want to captain). It is possible that someone feels it’s best to do it after the World Cup but that is their point of view. But he wanted to quit, and it was purely his decision. And we respected it. See he has contributed so much to Indian cricket that everyone in the cricket board respects him. We would like to see Virat in action on the ground,” added Dhumal.
