‘Hardik ka kya hoga phir’ – Fans react to reports of Jasprit Bumrah becoming vice-captain for Asia Cup 2023

Hardik Pandya was the vice-captain for the last few series for Team India

Jasprit Bumrah is expected to take over from Hardik Pandya as Team India’s vice-captain ahead of the upcoming 2023 Asia Cup, which begins on August 30.

According to the Times of India, the Indian Cricket Board is going to announce the team roster for the continental event on August 21. Bumrah is presently captaining India during the three-match Twenty20 International series against Ireland.

According to the source, the Ajit Agarkar-led men’s selection committee would meet in New Delhi on August 21. However, head coach Rahul Dravid is scheduled to be present in person and skipper Rohit Sharma would most likely attend through video conference. The Asia Cup team will be considered, as will the possibility of upgrading Bumrah to vice-captain.

Pandya took over to be India’s vice-captain in white-ball cricket previously this year, succeeding KL Rahul. Earlier this month, he led the Men in Blue to a 2-3 T20I series loss versus the West Indies. Many criticised the all-rounder’s leadership and strategy.

The ODI World Cup 2023, in particular, will begin in October. Bumrah might also be Rohit’s deputy in the tournament. Pandya’s leadership credentials improved as he led Gujarat Titans towards the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) championship. This year, the Ahmedabad-based team finished second which further proved his critics.

Meanwhile, the all-rounder helped India to 10 victories in 16 Twenty20 Internationals (5 losses, NR: 1). Under his command, the Men in Blue only prevailed in one out of their three One-Day Internationals.

Due to the fitness concerns of KL Rahul as well as Shreyas Iyer, India may choose a 17-member Asia Cup roster instead of 15. Unlike the rules for the ODI World Cup, Asia Cup regulations allow for a roster of 17 players.

Meanwhile, the apex cricket body has set September 5 as the last day for selecting the World Cup roster. As a result, the Indian selectors have to decide on the side’s vice-captain as soon as possible.
