The fans witnessed one such brilliant fielding display from Shardul Thakur of the Delhi team in their match against Kolkata.
The Indian all-rounder took one of the best catches of the season. He grabbed Ajinkya Rahane’s catch while running backward from mid-on to the long-on fence. The catch reminded fans of the famous Viv Richards catch of Kapil Dev in the World Cup 1983 finals.
The 1983 catch from Kapil Dev is etched in the memories of Indian cricket fans. It was a brilliant display of fielding skills by the Indian legend under pressure. If Kapil Dev had not held on to the catch, Richards could have taken the game away from India. The dismissal of Richards at the stage was responsible in a huge way for India winning the World Cup. Shardul Thakur’s efforts reminded fans of the iconic moment.
Harbhajan Singh was might impressed by Thakur’s effort and said- “Shardul Thakur’s catch can be compared to Kapil Dev’s catch in the 1983 World Cup,†while commentating on the match.
Besides the catch, Thakur announced his arrival at the tournament with a brilliant performance with both bat and ball. He played a brilliant cameo of 29 runs off 11 deliveries while batting helping Delhi to post 215 in 20 overs. Again, while bowling he also picked up 2 wickets. The whole team of Delhi looked on song as they defeated Kolkata by 44 runs in the match.
