Glenn Maxwell will miss Australia‘s upcoming one-day series against England after breaking his leg in an accident at a party. Maxwell broke his tibula in his left leg during an incident at a friend’s 50th birthday party on Saturday evening and had surgery to reset the bone on Sunday.

The 34-year-old is expected to be sidelined for eight to twelve weeks after slipping while running in the backyard. In the meantime, Sean Abbott has been called up to fill Maxwell’s spot for the three-match series against the Three Lions.

Glenn is a critical part of our white-ball structure: George Bailey

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Australian selection chief George Bailey stated, “Glenn is in good spirits”. “It was an unfortunate accident and we feel for Glenn in the circumstances given he was in great touch in his last few games. Glenn is a critical part of our white-ball structure and we will continue to support him through his recovery and rehabilitation,” Bailey added.

The one-day international series kicks off on Thursday at the Adelaide Oval, followed by matches at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday and the Melbourne Cricket Ground on November 22. The injury is also expected to keep Maxwell from playing for the Melbourne Stars in this year’s Big Bash League, which begins on December 13, with a rehabilitation timeline to be announced in the coming days.

Stars general manager Blair Crouch said: “Glenn is obviously a huge part of the Melbourne Stars and we wish him well in his recovery. He will continue to be a key part of the club during the start of the season as he works his way back to full fitness and we look forward to seeing him soon.”

Maxwell’s Indian T20 League franchise, Bangalore,  also had a message for their star all-rounder. In an unfortunate incident, our star all-rounder fractured his left leg and has undergone surgery. Wishing you a speedy recovery, @Gmaxi_32. Can’t wait to see you smash them cricket balls again!” they tweeted.
