‘Gautam bhai ka reaction dekhna hai’ – Fans react as MS Dhoni’s jersey number set to be retired as tribute to former Team India skipper
Mahendra Singh Dhoni was a key player in the Indian team throughout his 15-year long international career
The Indian Cricket Board has decided to retire the number 7 in honour of MS Dhoni. Thus, Team India members will not be wearing the number 7 on the backside of their jerseys. When wearing the No. 7, the former captain of India led his team to three white-ball major global championships. There is, to put it mildly, a legendary connection between his name along with the number.
Following the legendary No. 10 jersey worn by Sachin Tendulkar, this will be the second jersey number to be retired. From today onwards, the jersey number of the great wicket-keeper will no longer be accessible.
The Indian Express reported that the Indian Cricket Board has advised both the debutants and the players for the national squad that squad numbers 7 and 10 will not be accessible in any manner whatsoever.
A senior official from the board told the Indian Express about the decision. He said, “The young players and current Indian team players have been told not to pick M S Dhoni’s Number 7 jersey. The Indian Cricket Board has decided to retire Dhoni’s T-shirt for his contribution to the game. A new player can’t get No. 7, and No. 10 was already off the list of available numbers.”
“A recent debutant has just 30-odd numbers to choose from” : Senior Board member
The board member spoke about how youngsters that get into the team have only a few numbers to choose from. He made everyone aware about the process they follow with the senior players’ jersey numbers.
The senior Board official added, “At present, 60-odd numbers are designated to the regulars in the Indian team and those in contention. So even if a player is out of the team for about a year or so, we don’t give away his number to a new player. That means a recent debutant has just 30-odd numbers to choose from.”
