Four Indian batters who got out hit wicket in a T20I match
In international cricket, a hit wicket is an uncommon method of dismissal.
In international cricket, a hit wicket is an uncommon method of dismissal. Interestingly, none of India’s batters were dismissed in this manner during the country’s first 11 years as a T20I nation. However, there have been four such incidents in the last four years in which an Indian batter accidentally knocked the bails off the stumps while playing a shot, with two of them occurring in the last week. Here are all the instances of Indian players getting out hit-wicket in a T20I game.
1. Shreyas Iyer vs New Zealand- 2022
Shreyas Iyer is the most recent addition to this list. The right-handed batter was out in the second T20I of the ongoing series against New Zealand when he was bowled out. He looked in good form during his inning, scoring 13 runs on eight balls while hitting one four and one six.
Shreyas Iyer was out via hit wicket on the fourth ball of the innings’ 13th over, bowled by Lockie Ferguson. He attempted to guide a back-of-length delivery towards the square leg region, but his leg collided with the stumps.

2. Hardik Pandya vs England- 20-20 World Cup 2022
Hardik Pandya delivered one of the best T20I knocks of his career against England earlier this month in the 20-20 World Cup 2022 semifinal. Pandya scored 63 runs off 32 balls in a difficult situation at number five, smashing four fours and five sixes.
He could have scored four more runs if he hadn’t hit the stumps on the final ball of the inning. Pandya smacked a Chris Jordan ball toward the leg-side boundary, but his leg struck the stumps, resulting in his dismissal.
3. Harshal Patel vs New Zealand- 2021
Harshal Patel is another Indian batter who has been dismissed in this manner by Lockie Ferguson. Last year, the fast bowler made his T20I debut against New Zealand at home. However, he did not have a great start to his international career, getting out in an unusual manner.
Patel stood deep inside the crease against Ferguson in the 19th over of the series’ third T20I at Eden Gardens. When he attempted a shot towards the off-side, he dislodged the bails off the stumps and was out hit wicket.
#IndVsNZ A very strange dismissal as #HarshalPatel is out hit the wicket! 2nd Indian after #KLRahul to be out in this manner. Harshal was standing very far back in his crease. pic.twitter.com/jctmbfafDD

4. KL Rahul vs Sri Lanka- 2018
KL Rahul, the Indian T20I vice-captain, was the first player in the country to lose his wicket in this manner. It occurred during a Nidahas Trophy match against Sri Lanka in 2018. The Men in Blue went on to win the tournament.
Rahul was on 18 when he hit a delivery from Jeevan Mendis to the leg side. Rahul looked to tap the ball and steal a single but lost his wicket while doing so. He misjudged the landing of his backfoot as he got out, hit wicket.
