Former Team India batter suggests areas that Shubman Gill can improve on amid poor run
Gautam Gambhir and Irfan Pathan closely analyzed the dismissal of Shubman Gill.
Shubman Gill, in the opinion of Gautam Gambhir, has to work on his technique when facing entering deliveries since he is unable to afford giving a significant space between his bat and pad allowing the ball to get through.
During India’s Asia Cup 2023 Group A match against Pakistan on Saturday, September 2, Gill only scored 10 runs from 32 deliveries. Before the game was abandoned owing to rain, the Men in Blue got bowled out for 266 upon choosing to bat first. Babar Azam and company had not seen a single delivery.
Gambhir was questioned about his opinions on Gill’s firing during a conversation on Star Sports, and he said, “It is a technical flaw but I believe he tried to play differently from his natural game because a lot of wickets had fallen from the other end. Rohit Sharma lost his wicket, then Virat Kohli lost his wicket and after that Shreyas Iyer also got out.”
The former India opener spoke about the mistake that Shubman Gill was making on a regular basis. He said, “So he was trying to build a partnership. It was a good ball as well but if you play while leaving such a big gap between bat and pad, a quality bowler will expose you. It’s extremely necessary for Shubman Gill to work on this.”
Irfan Pathan’s opinion on Shubman Gill’s dismissal
Shubman Gill’s propensity for not using his front foot would make him vulnerable to pitched-up deliveries, according to Irfan Pathan.
He said, “That is why I have been repeatedly saying that he (Gill) is not covering the line with his front foot. When you don’t do that, if the fuller-length balls, which Haris Rauf bowled, move even a little after pitching, you will have difficulties.”
Gill has been working on the hands along with playing somewhat shorter deliveries that come in cautiously, Pathan said in his conclusion. He did, however, warn that the elegant opening has trouble whenever a driveable ball shifts it’s line.
