Former India batter makes huge claim about Indian team ahead of ODI World Cup 2023
Abhishek Nayyar spoke about how similar type of players might hamper the team.
Abhishek Nayar, the former cricketer, believes that having numerous batters with identical batting styles might be problematic for Team India during the forthcoming 2023 Asia Cup.
According to him, Shreyas Iyer has become the sole designated hitter on the Indian team who can raise the stakes straight away. The other batters, according to Nayar, typically take time to relax before attempting to hit the much-needed big shots.
The biggest concern for me is that India have very similar types of players: Abhishek Nayyar
The former right-handed batter spoke to Jio Cinema about his major concerns with the Indian team. He said, “The biggest concern for me is that India have very similar types of players. When you look at your top order, barring Shreyas Iyer, who can play big shots from the outset, everyone else is someone who will take their time before they play big shots. We had Hardik Pandya, who used to hit a six off a spinner on the first ball he faced, but now even he has stopped doing it.”
India might not have more than one left-handed batsman in the starting XI, he added. Hardik Pandya might have had to go down to No. 7 if Ravindra Jadeja had been moved up in the order in order to attack a left-arm spinner, according to Nayar.
The former Kolkata Knight Rider support staff said, “Having right-handers, although it is not so much of a concern when the ball is turning in these conditions and you have a left-arm spinner against you, Ravindra Jadeja is the only left-handed batter we have. That will push Hardik Pandya to No. 7. That part of it is a bit of a question mark. Because if KL Rahul and Virat Kohli are batting together, who is going to be the aggressor?”
Notably, Mumbai Indians batter Tilak Varma will participate for India in the upcoming Asia Cup 2023. But since he has not played in the format yet, it’s unclear whether he would get a chance in the starting XI. Furthermore, the team may think about bringing in Axar Patel to add much-needed squad depth.
