2022 has seen some legendary players calling it quits from their international careers. The likes of Roger Federer, Sebastian Vettel, and others announced retirement from the sport that they sparkled in. Once a player reaches legendary status in a particular sport, the most difficult part of the career would be their retirement. 

From Roger Federer to Mithali Raj, we present to you the five players who bid adieu to their international careers.

Here are the five legendary athletes who announced retirement in the year 2022:

1) Serena Williams:

Coming into the US Open 2022, the player hinted at her retirement through a Vogue cover tale. The dream run ended in the match against Ajla Tomljanovic from Australia on September 2. The all-time greatest bid adieu to the sport with an emotional note. In her stellar career, Williams won as many as 23 Grand Slam singles titles. 

“I thank everyone that’s here, that’s been on my side so many years, decades. Oh my gosh, literally decades. But it all started with my parents. And they deserve everything. So I’m really grateful for them,” Williams said during her retirement speech. 

2) Roger Federer:

The legendary Swiss will step onto the field one last time in the Laver Cup 2022. The 41-year-old announced his retirement on his social media accounts on September 16. The legend has won Grand Slam as many as 20 times. 

“I’m 41 years old. I have played more than 1500 matches over 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt of, and now I must recognize when it is time to end my competitive career,” Federer said in his statement as he announced his retirement. 

3) Sebastian Vettel:

The legendary F1 racer will bid adieu to the sport at the end of this year. Sebastian Vettel announced his decision to retire from the sport in July 2022. The Australian will go down as one of the greatest to have ever graced the sport. 

“But today is not about saying goodbye. Rather, it is about saying thank you – to everyone – not least to the fans, without whose passionate support Formula 1 could not exist,” Vettel said while announcing his retirement. 

4) Mithali Raj:

The legendary Indian star announced her retirement in July 2022. The 40-year-old announced the decision on social media after contemplating the decision for a long time. In a career that lasted for almost 23 years, Mithali Raj set a legacy that every Indian woman would look up to. She played as many as 232 ODIs, 12 Tests, and 89 T20Is in women’s cricket. 

“It was an honour to have led the team for so many years. It definitely shaped me as a person & hopefully helped shape Indian Women’s Cricket as well. This journey may have ended but another one beckons as I’d love to stay involved in the game I love and contribute to the growth of Women’s cricket in India and world over,” Raj said in the statement as she announced her retirement.

5) Jhulan Goswami:

Jhulan Goswami is one of the finest, if not, the finest pacers of all time for India. The woman star is all set to retire on September 24, 2022 at Lord’s and will be given a splendid farewell for a stellar career. 

Throughout her career, Jhulan Goswami played for India in 201 WODIs, 68 WT20Is, and 12 WTests. The player has taken numerous scalps to her name and it shall remain tough for the aspiring ones to reach her stature. She has bagged as many as 252 scalps in the One Day Internationals alone.
