Five Indian Players who played the 20-20 World Cup 2021 but are not in the team for 2022 World Cup
In the World Cup team last year, several youngsters were brought into the squad.
The Indian Cricket Board, on Monday, announced the squad for the upcoming 20-20 world cup in Australia. There were no surprise changes to the team that played in the recent Asia Cup. The inclusion of Japsrit Bumrah and Harshal Patel were the only changes made to the squad who came in for Avesh Khan and Ravi Bishnoi. There were many names that were missed out from the team for the mega event.
In the World Cup team last year, several youngsters were brought into the squad. However, not everyone could manage to seal their place in the squad this year. On that note, let’s take a look at five such players who played the 2021 20-20 World Cup but won’t be featuring in this year’s World Cup:
1. Varun Chakravarthy
Chakravarthy was brought into the Indian team on the back of his stupendous performances in the Indian T20 League last year. The spinner picked up 21 wickets for the Kolkata franchise and played a key role in taking the team to the finals. The 31-year-old was considered India’s trump card in the tournament. But the spinner couldn’t live up to his reputation and had a wicket-less campaign in the three matches he played. Chakravarthy was never seen donning the Indian jersey after that.
2. Ishan Kishan
Ishan Kishan was also brought into the side for his prolific run in the Indian T20 league 2021. He was the second wicketkeeper in the squad after Rishabh Pant. Kishan was given a chance to play in the do-or-die match against New Zealand. However, the southpaw couldn’t do much and only managed to get four runs against his name. The 24-year-old last played in the T20I series against West Indies earlier this year. Since then, he is not a part of the squad. He was overlooked for the Asia Cup as well.
3. Rahul Chahar
Rahul Chahar was brought into the Indian team as a replacement for Yuzvendra Chahal who had become ineffective in the middle overs. Chahar only played one match in the World Cup last year against Namibia where he was wicketless. The wrist spinner hasn’t played for India since then.
4. Shardul Thakur
Shardul Thakur had cemented his place in the Indian team in all three formats after his heroics in the historic Gabba Test in 2021. He was brought into the World Cup as an X-factor who could pick wickets at important stages of the game. He could swing his bat around and score valuable runs for the team lower down the order. However, the star all-rounder couldn’t make a name for himself at the grand event as he failed with both bat and ball. Thakur last played a T20I against West Indies at Kolkata in February. He was last seen in Indian colours on the recent Zimbabwe tour.
5. Ravindra Jadeja
Ravindra Jadeja is considered as the most valuable player in the Indian team across formats. He sustained a freakish injury during the Asia Cup which meant that he would not be fit for the 20-20 World Cup. Jadeja’s absence from the team will be a big blow as the all-rounder is in the golden period of his career scoring runs and picking wickets across all three formats. Jadeja showed great performance with the bat on India’s last tour to Australia.
