Cricket is the most celebrated sport in India. Fans outpour their love on cricketers irrespective of their nationality. The Indian T20 league brings many foreign cricketers to India every year. These cricketers not only get a chance to play in the cricket-crazy country but also get to know its culture closely.
Some cricketers get so fond of its culture that they start adapting to it. With the amount of love cricketers receive in India, they can’t help but accept it as their second home. On that note, let’s take a look at five foreign cricketers who’ve found their second home in India:
- AB De Villiers
De Villiers is one of the most loved foreign cricketers in India. The Indian crowd loves him so much that they were found chanting his name during an India vs South Africa ODI match in 2015. The cricketer shares a great bonding with the Indian batter Virat Kohli.
He even gave his cricketing gear for auction to help the underprivileged during the Covid-19 pandemic in India. The former South African captain has recently joined hands with an NGO to support impoverished children in India. Despite him not playing in the Indian T20 League this year, De Villiers was missed by his Bangalore franchise fans as they brought placards of his name to the stadium.
2. Dwayne Bravo:
DJ Bravo gained massive popularity in India since he began playing for the Chennai franchise in the Indian T20 League. The cricketer is loved for his unique celebrations on the field. He has even shot several songs in the country. In one music video, he was seen donning the traditional ‘lungi’ and dancing his heart out. The cricketer continues to play for the Chennai franchise till now.
3. David Warner:
Warner’s love for India and its culture is not hidden from anyone. The player openly shows his liking for India by dancing to Tollywood movie songs and also enacts famous scenes from their movies. The entire Warner family is seen making several funny short videos on his Instagram. The opener was not retained by the Hyderabad franchise in the mega auction but is still loved by the entire fanbase of the franchise.
4. Brett Lee:
Brett Lee is another Australian cricketer who shares a special relationship with India. The fast bowler has a special liking for Bollywood films and is a huge fan of several Bollywood stars. He even released an entire album with singer Asha Bhosle. He went on to star in a film titled ‘Unindian’ directed by an Indian.
5. Chris Gayle:
Gayle is inarguably the best entertainer on the cricket field. He lit up the Indian T20 league with his stupendous stroke play in several seasons. Gayle has a massive fan following in India not just for his batting prowess but also for his ‘on-field’ antics. He was mostly seen having entertaining celebrations after picking up a wicket or a catch. Despite him not playing in the Indian T20 League last season, Gayle continues to find a special place in the Indian fans’ hearts.
