Five big names who won’t feature in Australian Open 2023
The Australian Open starts on January 16th.
The Australian Open marks the beginning of the Tennis season. It is the first Grand Slam on offer for players to win and start their season on a great note. Through the Australian Open players lay down a marker for what is to come for the rest of the year. Many also analyze the changes they need to make in order to win other Grand Slams if not the Australian Open.
While there is immense excitement among fans and players alike for the mega tournament, this year, the moods have been dampened a little. Many big names have decided to forgo the tournament this time around which has caused fans a little disappointment.
Let’s look at the five big names who will miss out on the Australian Open 2023.
Carlos Alcaraz
The biggest of names who is giving this year’s Australia Open a miss is the 2022 US Open winner Carlos Alcaraz. The hard-hitting baseliner from Spain injured his right hamstring during training which has forced him to withdraw from the Australia Open 2023.
Naomi Osaka
Two-time Australian Open champions Naomi Osaka is the latest Tennis star to withdraw from the first Grand Slam of 2023. The 25-year-old hasn’t given any reason for her pulling out. She has not played a match since September 2022 and rustiness could be the biggest of many potential reasons.
Sarena Williams
7 times Australia Open winner Serena Williams was expected to return to the mega event in 2023. The 23- time Grand Slam winner however hasn’t recovered from a hamstring injury sustained in the first-round match at Wimbledon and would give the Australian Open 2023 a miss.
Venus Williams
Seven-time Grand Slam winner and former number 1 player Venus Williams is going to miss the Australian Open for the very first time in a decade. This would also be the first time since 1997 that both of the Williams sisters will miss the Australian Open.
Dominic Thiem
2020 US Open winner Dominic Thiem is the latest big name from the Men’s side to withdraw from the Australia Open 2023. The Austrian Tennis star has struggled with a wrist injury in recent months and was also suffering from a cold recently. Theim announced that he will give Australian Open a miss after ‘reassessing all matters.”
