Surprising loss for Spain in the Round of 16.
On 6 December 2022, Spain took on Morocco in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022. It was the seventh match of the Round of 16 that took place at the Education City Stadium. Spain finished the group stage in the second spot in Group E. They managed only four points in three games while they suffered a shocking loss against Japan.
On the other hand, Morocco surprised everyone by sealing the top spot in Group F. They managed seven points in three games while they won two games and drew one. It was a massive moment for Morroco players and fans as they qualified for the knockout round. So, fans were hoping for an exciting match between these sides.

Spain fans were hoping to see a dominating football over Morocco since the kickoff. But, they failed to do so despite having the maximum possession of the ball. Spain came close to opening the scoring in the 27th minute. However, Marco Asensio’s effort ended at the side net only. Then, in the 33rd minute, Noussair Mazeaoui had a shot from the distance.
But, Spain’s goalkeeper Unai Simon denied him with ease. After that, Nayef Aguerd had an effort that went wide off the target in the 43rd minute. Thus, the first half ended 0-0. In the second half, Spain looked more determined than Morocco. In the 47th minute, Ferran Torres played a one-two with Llorente in order to break the deadlock. But, Noussair Mazraoui pulled his shirt and conceded a free kick in favor of Spain. Then, in the 55th minute, Marco Asensio managed to give a ball to Dani Olmo with a beautiful flick.
However, Morocco’s goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou did not make any mistake as he saved Olmo’s fast shot with ease. in the 78th minute, Olmo came up with a wild effort. But, his effort was quite wide and far off the right post only and it did not trouble Bounou. After that, Morata had a shot that went across the goal in the 82nd minute. Thus, the game finished 0-0 after 90 minutes as the match went into extra time. However, both teams failed to break the deadlock as the game finished 0-0 after 120 minutes. In the penalty shootout, Morocco defeated Spain 3-0 and created history.
