On 27 November 2022, Argentina locked horns with Mexico in Lusail Stadium. It was a Group C encounter which took place in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. However, it was a must-win game for Lionel Messi’s Argentina. In their opening fixture, they suffered a shocking loss to Saudi Arabia by 2-1.
On the other hand, Mexico were coming off after a 0-0 draw with Poland. So, Argentina were looking to survive in the tournament by winning the match. While Mexico were looking to get their first three points in this year’s World Cup. All eyes were on Messi as this World Cup is going to be his last one.

Speaking of the match, in the 11th minute, Luis Chavez hit a free kick. Then, Hector Herrera tried hard to go for a shot. But, he managed to touch the ball only. As a result, the ball ended wide of the far post. Hence, it did not trouble the Mexican keeper, Ochoa. Then, Argentina’s Gonzalo Montiel received a yellow card for a foul in the 43rd minute. As a result, the referee awarded Mexico a free kick.
In the 45th minute, Alexis Vega managed to hit an inch-perfect free-kick over the wall. But, Argentina keeper Emiliano Martinez had no problems as he made the ball stick to his gloves only. Hence, the first half of the game ended 0-0. In the second half, both teams did not start well when it comes to attacking each other.
But, in the 64th minute, Lionel Messi scored the first goal of the match. Angel Di Maria provided the assist and Messi managed to find the back of the net from 25 yards out. It was Messi’s eighth goal in FIFA World Cups for his country. Then, Messi came up with an assist and Enzo Fernandez hit the second goal for Argentina. Thus, Argentina defeated Mexico by 2-0 in the World Cup. This win kept them alive in the tournament as one more match to go in the group stage.
