Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has been ordered to pay a monthly alimony of Rs 1.30 lakh to his estranged wife Hasin Jahan by the Kolkata High Court.  The order, passed by Additional District and Sessions Judge, Alipore (South 24 Paraganas), will modify an earlier order, according to which Shami was paying Rs 80,000 per month for the maintenance of his daughter. He will now pay the additional Rs 50,000 to his alienated wife.

Shami’s lawyer Salim Rahaman revealed the entire proceedings of the case in a conversation with IndianExpress. “She had filed a case claiming maintenance for her child and herself. For the child, my client gave consent to pay 80,000 as maintenance. My client has been paying that since 2018. But related to her maintenance, it was declined by my client. She had claimed Rs 7 lakh monthly maintenance for herself. She had prayed in 2018.,” said Rahaman.

“Court has now asked him to pay Rs 50,000 as maintenance. Rs 80,000 he has been paying. She had claimed a total of Rs 10 lakh including herself and the child. She had claimed Rs 3 lakh for the child, he gave consent of 80 thousand rupees which was allowed by the court,” he added.

However, Shami’s ex-wife Hasin Jahan was not happy with the court’s order and said that she will further challenge it since the maintenance amount is too low for her.

“Rs 50,000 is minimal for me so I have to challenge this. It’s true that the verdict is in my favour but I will go to the high court as the stipulated money for my maintenance is very less considering the income of Shami,” Jahan said in an interview with News18.

I deserve much more alimony for spending a quality life: Hasin Jahan

“It was really difficult for me to continue the legal fight for five years. Since I don’t have any financial support or earning, I only know how I arranged the money for so long. Thus, I deserve much more alimony for spending a quality life,” she added.

Jahan worked as a model and cheerleader for the Kolkata franchise in the Indian T20 League before marrying Shami in 2014. The couple was blessed with a daughter in 2015. However, in 2018, Jahan accused Shami of domestic violence and dowry harassment as some screenshots of his chats with other girls went viral on social media.

When asked about Shami’s recent performances for India, Jahan said she is unmoved, “I just want to focus on my daughter, her studies, and her well-being.”

Meanwhile, Twitter was abuzz with reactions on the court’s order. Here are some of the Tweets:
