According to a report by InsideSport, Dewald Brevis is set to be fast-tracked in the South African team for the upcoming 20-20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Brevis made his name during the U19 World Cup in the West Indies earlier this year. During the tournament, he amassed 506 runs in six games including two hundred and three fifties. At that time, commentator Alan Wilkins had said that Brevis premeditates the bowlers.

“It’s almost as if he premeditates and says ‘this bowler’s going to go’. He plays these audacious shots, he’s got touch, but he goes big down the ground. He’s a formidable force for South African cricket, and I think he’s going to go all the way,” said Wilkins.

This performance earned him a contract for the Mumbai team in the ongoing Indian T20 League 2022. In the ongoing cash-rich league, the right-hander has impressed everyone with the wide variety of stroke play. He has played six games and scored 124 runs. His average is on the lower side (20.67) but the strike rate is on the higher side (155). The youngster has been compared with the former South Africa skipper AB de Villiers.

For the unversed, Brevis has said that de Villers was his idol growing up. Notably, while batting, the youngster has shown glimpses of the former Proteas skipper. After the ongoing cash-rich league, the Proteas will play the five-match T20I series against India in the latter’s backyard. The series is a part of the preparation for the 20-20 World Cup to be played in Australia in October and November this year.

Talking about his achievements, he broke the record of the highest aggregate runs in the U19 World Cup. While scoring 506 runs, he broke the record of Shikhar Dhawan, who got 505 runs in the 2004 edition, which was played in Bangladesh. It will be interesting to see how his career shapes after being fast-tracked in the international circuit. The Johannesburg-born player lacks experience in domestic cricket as he has only played only 15 T20s
