Cricket Australia makes a significant change in Test squad, Steve Smith set to open the innings
Former Australia captain Steve Smith is set to replace David Warner as the opener.
Cricket Australia has made significant decisions in its squad selection for the upcoming Test against the West Indies in Adelaide. Former captain Steve Smith is set to replace David Warner as the opener. This strategic move was confirmed by Head of Selectors George Bailey during a press conference, unveiling a 13-man squad.
Steve Smith’s shift to the opening position will see him partner with Usman Khawaja, allowing Cameron Green to take the coveted spot at four in the batting lineup. Bailey addressed questions about whether this change was an experiment and if Smith might return to his previous position at No. 4 if he faces challenges as an opener.
Bailey responded, “Tongue in cheek, I could say everything’s an experiment. That’s been part of the discussions with Steve; I believe he’s keen for this to be a significant chapter of his career.” When asked if Smith is expected to continue playing as an opener until he retires from Test cricket, Bailey stated, “He may do. It’s not something he’s doing on a whim or something he wants to do for one match and see how he goes.”
“Itch that he’d like to scratch,” says George Bailey
Bailey emphasised that Smith sees the challenge of opening the batting in Test cricket as an “itch that he’d like to scratch,” showcasing the player’s willingness to embrace new challenges despite previous success in different positions.
Describing Smith’s approach as selfless, Bailey highlighted the player’s hunger for trying something new and different. This decision reflects Smith’s commitment to evolving his game and contributing to the team’s success in various roles.
In a statement released by Cricket Australia, Bailey noted, “Cameron Green will come into the playing XI for the Test in Adelaide in a squad also containing Scott Boland and Matthew Renshaw. We have selected a team we believe contains the best six batters in the country.” The selectors’ confidence in the chosen squad signals a strategic approach to ensuring a strong and competitive team for the upcoming Test series.
