Commonwealth Games 2022: Full list of Commonwealth Games sports & events

The sporting fraternity is eagerly waiting for the Commonwealth Games 2022 to kick off in just a day as Birmingham is all set to host the mega event from 28th July to 8th August. It will be the third occasion when England is hosting the quadrennial event.

Athletes from 72 commonwealth nations will be competing against each other as they sweat it out on the field in pursuit of the medals. A total of 280 events will be contested in 20 sports for twelve days as the crowd gets behind their favourite athletes to go all the way to the mega event.

The 22nd edition of the prestigious event is going to be even more special as cricket is returning to Commonwealth Games after 24 years. Eight women’s teams will be contesting against each other in a T20 tournament. The mega event will also feature events like Basketball 3×3, Wheelchair Basketball 3×3, and Para Table Tennis.

Here’s the complete schedule and the list of sports along with the events in the Commonwealth Games 2022:

Aquatics

The Sandwell Aquatics Centre will host two subcategories of aquatics including diving and swimming. With diving set to take place from August 4th to August 8th, Swimmers will compete from 29th July to the 3rd of August.

Athletics

Athletics is one of the oldest sports in the Commonwealth Games. Alexander Stadium of Birmingham will host 58 events in which athletes and para-athletes will be seen participating.

Badminton

Badminton will be featuring six events including men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles followed by mixed doubles and mixed team. Solihull’s National Exhibition Centre will be hosting all the Badminton events which will begin on 29th July.

Basketball 3×3 and Wheelchair Basketball 3×3

The two events will be making their debut at the Commonwealth Games this year. The matches of the events will be played in Smithfield.

 Beach Volleyball

Beach Volleyball is all set to make its second appearance at the mega event after making its debut in 2018 at Gold Coast, Australia. Smithfield stadium will host the beach volleyball matches.

Boxing

Boxing is considered the heart of the Commonwealth Games. The event will feature a total of 16 categories including both men’s and women’s events. The matches will be played at the National Exhibition Centre.

Cricket

The game is making a return to the multi-sports festival after 24 years in a completely changed format. The women’s cricket teams from eight nations will be seen competing for the medals in the tournament. The matches will be contested in the T20 format. Birmingham’s Edgbaston Stadium will host all matches of the cricket competition. Notably, last time, the competition was played by men’s cricketers in the List-A format.

Cycling

Mountain biking, track cycling, and road cycling will be the three categories of this sport. Players from different countries will compete in 26 different events in three subcategories. Cannock Chase Forest, Lee Valley Velopark, and Warwick’s Myton Fields have been finalized as the venues for the cycling.

Gymnastics

Birmingham Arena will host both artistic and rhythmic gymnastics. 20 different events will be played in gymnastics from the 29th of July to the 6th of August 2022.

Hockey

It will be the seventh appearance of hockey at the Commonwealth Games since making its debut in 1998. The University of Birmingham is all set to host all the hockey matches from the 29th of July to the 8th of August.

Judo

Judo was not a part of the Commonwealth Games of 2018 in Gold Coast. However, it will be played this time around. Coventry Stadium & Arena’s indoor venue will be the place where players will compete in all judo events.

Lawn Bowls

It is the record 21st time when Lawn Bowls is a part of the Commonwealth Games. It was only excluded once from the event during the 1966 Games. Players from different countries will lock horns in the events of this sport from the 29th of July to the 6th of August. Victoria Park bowling greens in Leamington Spa will host all the events of lawn bowls.

Netball

Netball will be played in Commonwealth Games for the seventh time since its introduction to the games in 1998. The National Exhibition Centre Arena will be the venue for Netball from the 29th of July to the 7th of August.

Para Powerlifting

Para powerlifting was first introduced at the Commonwealth Games 2002 in Manchester. The game will be played in two categories including lightweight and heavyweight for both men’s and women’s participants. National Exhibition Centre will host all the events of this game.

Rugby Sevens

Coventry Stadium has been finalized to host the rugby sevens of both men and women. The games will be played from the 29th of July to the 31st of July 2022.

Squash

Squash will consist of a total of five events from the 29th of July to the final of the Games. The University of Birmingham is decided as the venue for all the events of squash.

Table Tennis and Para Table Tennis

20 years ago, Table Tennis was played for the first time at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. It will be the sixth time when TT will be a part of the games. National Exhibition Hall 3 will host all events of Table Tennis.

Triathlon and Para Triathlon

Sutton Park and Sutton Coldfield’s courses will host the events of triathlon and para-triathlon. The events of this game will be played from the 29th of July to the 31st of July.

Weightlifting

The events of weightlifting will be played in eight different weight categories. Players will compete in 16 different events in National Exhibition Hall 1 from 30th July to 3rd of August.

Wrestling

Wrestling will be played at the Commonwealth Games for a record 19th time. It will be played in 12 combined categories for both Men and Women. The matches of wrestling will be played at Coventry Arena on the 5th of August and the 6th of August.
