ODI World Cup 2023
‘Chalo kam se kam Champions Trophy toh qualify karenge’ – Fans react as England register thumping win over Netherlands by 160 runs in ODI World Cup 2023
With this win the England side have now moved onto seventh position and have kept alive their chances for Champions Trophy 2025 qualification
The match number 40 of the ODI World Cup 2023 saw the defending champions England take on the Netherlands. Both the teams entered the match needing a victory so that they could keep their hopes alive for the Champions Trophy. But it was eventually England who won the game against the Netherlands by a huge margin of 160 runs. With England defeat Netherlands, now they have moved onto seventh position.
In the match, the defending champions England, led by skipper Jos Buttler, won the toss and opted to bat first. England made a couple of changes to their lineup, replacing Liam Livingstone with Harry Brook and Mark Wood with Gus Atkinson. The Netherlands also made a change, bringing in Teja Nidamanuru for Saqib Zulfiqar.
Despite getting off to a strong start, the England team faced some setbacks in the middle overs, which threatened to limit their total to around 250 runs, even though it had initially seemed like they would easily surpass 300 runs. However, the heroics of England’s star batsman, Ben Stokes, who had not performed up to his usual standards in the tournament, turned the tide. At one point, England was struggling at 192/6, but Stokes’s powerful hitting allowed them to reach a total of 339 runs.
The exceptional England opener appeared to have regained his form as he dispatched every Dutch bowler to all parts of the ground, demonstrating why he is highly regarded in international cricket. Stokes played a magnificent innings, scoring 108 runs off just 84 deliveries, including six fours and six sixes. He received valuable support from Chris Woakes, who contributed 51 runs, and Dawid Malan, who scored 87 runs.

Netherlands bowed down to England’s spinners
In pursuit of the stiff target of 339 runs, the Netherlands side did not have the best of the starts as Chris Woakes struck early. Woakes accounted for Max Odowd’s (5) wicket in the fifth over of the innings. Sooner, Colin Ackermann (0) also followed the back to the hut. The Netherlands were looking to recover on the back of some brilliant stroke-making from Wesley Barresi (37) but he was unfortunately run out. After that, the Dutch kept on losing wickets at regular intervals and were 104/5.
But once again it was skipper Scott Edwards (38) and Nidamanuru (41*) who tried to steady the ship for the Netherlands. The duo stitched together a brilliant partnership of 59 runs but it was Moeen Ali who took the wicket of the skipper and sparked a downfall of their remaining batting. The stars of the show with the ball for England were Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid who picked up three wickets each. The Netherlands side were bundled out for just 179 runs. With this England defeat Netherlands , Netherlands face a scare of Champions Trophy 2025 qualification as they are now last in the points table.
