Washington Sundar has been named to India’s one-day international squad to replace Deepak Chahar for the remaining two matches against South Africa. Chahar had complained of stiffness in his back after the third T20I of the series. He will now be at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for further assessment.

The pacer had missed out on the first match of the series, gaining a lot of attention. However, no clarification was made as to why he was not included in the playing XI. The Indian Cricket Board has confirmed the development in their statement.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee named Washington Sundar as replacement for Deepak Chahar for the remainder of the ODI series against South Africa. Mr. Chahar had a stiffness in his back after the third and final T20I against South Africa in Indore and did not feature in India’s Playing XI in the first ODI in Lucknow. He will now head back to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and will be monitored by the Medical Team there,” read the statement.

Earlier, a source told PTI on condition of anonymity that Chahar had suffered an ankle injury. “Deepak has sustained a twisted ankle but it’s not too serious. However a few days of rest might be advisable. So it will be team management’s call if they would like to risk Deepak as he is in T20 World Cup stand-by list. In any case, if there is requirement there, it would be a priority,” he said.

Chahar was on standby for the 20-20 World Cup 2022 and had the chance to replace the injured Jasprit Bumrah in the main squad. However, that seems unlikely given his current condition. Mohammed Shami is currently expected to replace Bumrah in the 20-20 World Cup 2022.

India’s ODI squad

Shikhar Dhawan (Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer (vice-captain), Rajat Patidar, Rahul Tripathi, Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Sanju Samson (wicket-keeper), Shahbaz Ahmed, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan, Mohd. Siraj, Washington Sundar
