In the 29th match of the ODI World Cup 2023, hosts India face defending champions England at Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Ahead of a crucial game, the Indian team donned black armbands to pay tribute to the former India spinner, Bishan Singh Bedi.

It’s worth noting that earlier this week, the legendary spinner passed away at the age of 77. He has been phenomenal for India throughout his career, leading the team to memorable victories. Between 1967 and 1979, Bedi participated in 67 Tests for India, amassing 266 wickets. Additionally, he contributed to 10 one-day internationals, securing seven wickets.

Notably, he played a pivotal role in India’s first ODI triumph, with his economical bowling figures of 12-8-6-1 limiting East Africa to 120 runs in a 1975 World Cup match. It’s worth noting that Bedi has also served in administrative work for Cricket in India. In their sixth game of the ongoing tournament, the Indian team management and board decided to wear a black armband to show their respect for the legend.

Indian batters failed to get a good start against England

Regarding the game, England skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and opted to field first. His decision went well with the team, as Indian batters failed to face a fiery spell from David Willey and Chris Woakes. Woakes dismissed opener Shubman Gill for a mere nine runs off 13 balls with the help of a four. Soon, Willey bagged a huge wicket as he dismissed star batter Virat Kohli for a nine-ball duck.

After their departure, Shreyas Iyer also threw his wicket once again over a short ball. Chris Woakes dismissed him. However, India skipper Rohit Sharma and wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul tried to rescue the team. At the end of 20 overs, India crossed the 73-run mark after losing three wickets. Skipper Rohit Sharma was batting at 48 runs off 58 balls with the help of six fours and two sixes. Rahul was bowling for 17 runs off 27 balls with the help of a four.
