Star Australia batter Steve Smith is set to start new innings with Indian T20 League. The Australian superstar, in his new social media post, revealed that he will be joining an “exceptional and passionate” team in the ITL. This has fired up the speculations of him joining the commentary panel of either digital or TV broadcasters.

In a video posted on his social media, Steve Smith said, “Namaste India. I have got some exciting news for you. I am joining Indian T20 League 2023. I am joining an exceptional and passionate team in India.” Notably, by this Smith will join Indian T20 League for the first time since 2021 when he represented Delhi in the league.

Smith has been one of the most consistent foreign players in the history of the Indian T20 League. He has scored more than 2400 runs in 103 matches in the league. Smith made his Indian T20 League debut in 2012 and has represented six teams since then. He has hammered a hundred in the league and has also led now defunct Pune team in 2017. Under his leadership, the team went into the finals and lost against Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai by 1 run.

Steve Smith went unsold in Indian T20 League 2022

The former Australia skipper has been phenomenal with his number in Indian T20 League. He has represented several teams and has also been in leadership roles. Despite his great record, Smith was released by Delhi before the mega auction in 2022. Going into the auction with a base price of INR 1 Crore, he went unsold and was left out of the tournament.

In 2023, Steve Smith didn’t register himself and this led to the speculations of him joining the commentary panel. Although it remains the veil that how Smith will manage his contracts with both Indian T20 League and his County team. Notably, in the county, he has signed a deal with Sussex to play at least three games for them in May 2023.

Meanwhile, fans react to his video message and ask him to join any team as a player, not as a commentator. In a Tweet, a user said, “we want you back as a player.”
