‘Bhai super over he khel lo’ – Fans react as reports of new Indian T-10 league emerge

The reports have been circling around for a while and now the rumors have become even stronger.

The Indian Cricket Board is looking at the potential of launching a Tier-2 league in September or October that would resemble the Indian Premier League (IPL), although in the T10 format. Although Jay Shah is still ironing out the details, the idea has already garnered early support from stakeholders and possible sponsors.

The board has been impressed by the IPL’s success in recent years. It has truly transformed the sport from its start in 2008, according to a Moneycontrol article. Regarding the T10 format, some who are aware of the changes think it may play a significant role in making the sport even more popular in the country than it is now.

The report goes on to say that the board is trying to find solutions for a number of problems related to the possible launch of a new league, including the structure of the league itself and a number of other difficulties that also have an impact on the Indian Premier League.

Contracts that exist between Indian Cricket Board along with the IPL teams do contain a clause granting the latter the right of first refusal over any commercial model similar to the IPL which the governing body desires to introduce.

According to sources, the Indian Cricket Board will wait to make any final decisions on that specific clause.  In terms of the T10 format, India appears to be an unexplored market. These contests have been successful for some time and more countries might be adopting it in the long run.

“It could signal the death of 50-over cricket” : Sources

With the exception of a few high-profile series and significant global events across several forms, none of the remaining international activities have a chance to rival the global franchise-based tournaments.

The sources that are close to this report have shared some staggering pieces of information. They said, “A potential revenue-sharing model with the Indian Cricket Board could help these boards on the financial front. “But if that happens, it could signal the death of 50-over cricket sooner than one thinks.”
