‘Better for him’ – Former England player praises Ravindra Jadeja for stepping down as Chennai captain

Chennai haven’t really been at their best in the ongoing Indian T20 league 2022. With just three wins from 10 games, they are currently placed ninth on the points table. It is to be noted that Ravindra Jadeja was handed over Chennai’s captaincy ahead of the commencement of this edition.

However, he didn’t have a memorable stint as captain. The yellow army lost six out of their eight games under his leadership. Besides, Jadeja’s wasn’t really in the best of form either. Thus, he then handed over the captaincy responsibilities back to MS Dhoni.

This came as a surprising move to one and all. Nevertheless, Graeme Swann came in support of Jadeja’s bold decision. He stated that it was a big thing for the all-rounder to admit that captaincy isn’t his Cup of tea. The English legend spoke about how the male ego doesn’t always allow you to accept your shortcomings easily.

“We all have our favourite teams to play against and the fact that he has done well against Bangalore in the past is pretty important. It is such a big thing for Jadeja to admit that ‘look, captaincy is out of my league. I am not comfortable with it. The male ego doesn’t allow you to say it comfortably. So, the fact that he has done that and allowed MS to get back in is better for him, Chennai and it is good news all around and honestly, I love him. I think he is brilliant. What he gives to any franchise is incredible. Chennai would be half the side without him,” said Graeme Swann while speaking to Star Sports during the game between Bangalore and Chennai.

It is to be noted that the Bangalore-based franchise had defeated Chennai by 13 runs. In the meanwhile, even Ravi Shastri praised Jadeja for openly admitting his inability to lead Chennai. He also pointed out that the southpaw hasn’t captained any level in the past.

“Good on him to go up and tell straight up that I can’t handle it. It’s something I am not used to. He has not captained at any level whatsoever. So, it’s good. I think we will see a different cricketer. He can do what he wants, that responsibility of being captain is gone and all three departments can come out full force,” said Ravi Shastri.
