Captain Rohit Sharma was also ineffective with the bat, with only Virat Kohli (31 runs in 35 balls) and Axar Patel (29 runs in 29 balls) looking to score big. Mitchell Starc, who took a five-wicket haul in the match, dismissed Rohit after scoring only 13 runs.
After the match, Rohit explained how he lost his wicket while trying to play aggressively and trying to put Australia under pressure. “We thought we could put pressure on Australia and while trying to play aggressively, I lost my wicket,” the Indian skipper said in the post-match presentation.

The 35-year-old also made no excuses for his team’s dismal batting performance against Australia on Sunday. “We didn’t bat well enough. That wasn’t a pitch where we could have gotten out for 117. We didn’t apply ourselves. Even when you lose a couple of wickets early, it is crucial to create that partnership so that you can get back into the game. Yeah, that’s about it. I don’t think we batted well enough,” he added.
Rohit summarised the game in which India suffered its worst ODI defeat, saying, “When you have only under 117 runs on the board, the (opposition) batters have nothing to lose other than to come and try and swing the bat; get off to a good start and try and put the pressure.”
Despite the fact that the top-order has struggled to get going in the first two games of this series, the captain has refused to panic. “It has just been two games. The top order was on fire for our last six ODIs. So, not too much of a concern at all,” Rohit said.
“Our guys have enough experience. All the guys who played today have played a lot of ODIs, so it is about handling the situation well, and that is something we failed today,” Rohit explained.
