Australian opener David Warner scripts history during first T20I against West Indies
David Warner made a well deserved 70 off 36 balls to give a great foundation to his side against the West Indies.
Leading Australian batter David Warner made history on Friday, February 9, in Hobart, during the first Twenty20 International against the West Indies. He scored fifty runs or more.
With one six and twelve boundaries, the left-handed batsman scored a rapid 70 runs off of 36 balls with a strike rate of 194.44. In his 100th T20I, he also opened the wicket with Josh Inglis, sharing a 93-run partnership.
In December, Warner had earlier crushed a double century at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in his 100th Test match against South Africa. With two sixes and sixteen boundaries in the opening innings, the southpaw reached 200 off 255 balls. An inning and 182 runs later, the Australians were the winners.
At the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in 2017, Warner hit 124 runs against India in his 100th One-Day International. There were twelve boundaries and four sixes in his innings. Australia prevailed 21 runs to the game.
As a result, David Warner became the very first player in each format to record 50 or more points in his 100th game. The Australian has now joined New Zealand’s Ross Taylor and India’s Virat Kohli as the only players to have played 100 games in all formats.
Now, Warner’s goal is to make history by becoming the second Australian player to reach 3,000 runs in Twenty20 Internationals. In 100 games, the 37-year-old has scored 2964 runs, featuring a century along with 25 fifties. Only Aaron Finch, a former Australian captain who amassed 3120 runs in 103 Twenty20 Internationals, behind him.
Australia got blistering start against West Indies
Australia made a quick start in the opening Twenty20 International on Friday thanks to a masterful batting display from David Warner. Warner wasn’t the only player to smash 39 runs from 25 balls, with five boundaries and one six from Inglis.
The first breakthrough came from Jason Holder, who dismissed Inglis. Alzarri Joseph, who sent Warner and captain Mitchell Marsh back, was one of the better bowlers. Australia was able to register a massive score of 213 in their 20 overs.
