Age frauds done to evade age limits at different stages of a professional sport is something that every sport struggles with. There are countless stories of old players playing in the under-19 cricket levels, for example.

Currently, the Indian Cricket Board uses TW3 method to figure out the correct age of their players. This method, however, was very costly which is why Indian cricket has finally come up with a tool that could help eliminate the problem of age fraud while making the whole process 80% cheaper.

The new tool called the BoneXpert software is based on an X-ray of the left hand and wrist for the determination of age. The TW3 method costs Rs 2400 per bone test and requires a waiting of 3-4 days. The BoneXpert software could not only be done for Rs 288 but also gives results instantly.

A statement released by the Indian Cricket Board explaining the process said, “The X-rays are taken at the respective home centres of state associations at the X-ray centre in the presence of independent BCCI observer and

“BCCI AVP department collates them in a proper format and send it to two (2) independent radiologists on the BCCI panel for interpretation of bone age. Reporting also takes time since we have about 4 radiologists doing rating of 38 associations and every radiologist does interpretation of about 8-9 associations.”

“It can take any time between one day to three-four days to get the reporting of associations from the consultants depending upon the workload on them and number of players. The entire process takes around two months to be completed.”

“Though we are satisfied by the trial data run on the limited number of X-rays in our databank, still we want to run a trial with a large number of X-rays (approximately 3800) across all associations to be fully satisfied with the working of the software. Hence, we are proposing to use this software on a trial basis along with our traditional method of manual interpretation of x-rays by the radiologists,” the statement read further.
