India vs England 2024
‘India ne mehmaan nawaazi dikhayi hai’ – Fans react as Team India gets penalized by five runs during third Test against England
England will start their innings at 5/0 when they come out to bat later in the Test match.
On Friday, during the second day in the third Test match between India and England held at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, India was given a five-run penalty.
India’s Ravichandran Ashwin sprinted down the centre of the pitch, which resulted in a penalty. Joel Wilson, the on-field umpire, chastised Ashwin. Because of the offence, England will begin its innings having 5 for no loss. Ravichandran Ashwin did not get an official warning since Ravindra Jadeja got it yesterday in the third session. Since the latter was warned yesterday, if one more Indian batter entered the prohibited zone, they would have had to face the sanction.
Although it wasn’t a common occurrence in cricket, Ravindra Jadeja is regrettably having difficulty avoiding danger. During his batting career, he ran in the red zone five times, giving the opponent five penalty runs. This incident took place earlier in his career as well, and the opposition benefitted from it.
Now, as Jadeja batted alongside debutant Sarfaraz Khan , the umpire at the playing field issued him the warning. Ravindra Jadeja nearly lost his team five runs after getting the warning when he nearly rushed into the red zone. But he was shrewd enough to get out of the way just in time to spare his side from collecting penalty runs.
During the first hour of play in the morning session on Day 2, England claimed a few early wickets. After that Ravichandran Ashwin and Jurel have so far shown themselves to be reliable at the wicket. However, Jadeja will be unhappy that he didn’t add a lot more to his total from yesterday night.
What does the official rulebook say about this?
The MCC rulebook has an official ruling for such instances. The umpire was right in penalising Team India with the five runs.
The law states, “It is unfair to cause deliberate or avoidable damage to the pitch. If the striker enters the protected area in playing or playing at the ball, he/she must move from it immediately thereafter. A batter will be deemed to be causing avoidable damage if either umpire considers that his/her presence on the pitch is without reasonable cause.”
