WATCH: Jay Shah throws light on Rohit Sharma’s captaincy tenure ahead of T20 World Cup 2024
India is playing a 5-match Test series against England. The next assignment for the Men in Blue side is the T20 World Cup 2024 which is scheduled in June in the West Indies and USA. The secretary of the Indian Cricket Board Jay Shah has confirmed that Rohit Sharma will be captaining the side in the major tournament. The opener has been a brilliant captain in the white-ball format as he took India to a World Cup final after 12 years eventually losing to Australia.
He staged a spectacular comeback against Afghanistan. After getting dismissed for ducks in the first two games, the explosive opener struck his fifth T20I century in a nail-biting series decider in Bangalore. He captained the team aggressively at the ODI World Cup 2023 last year. The Indian captain batted explosively, giving India the start they needed in the powerplay.
The 36-year-old opener has been great to watch when he is in full flow. The batter became the first batter to score 5 centuries in the shortest format of the game. Jay Shah declared the decision of Rohit’s captaincy in front of the batter, head coach Rahul Dravid and the chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
Which means we were going to let him continue forward: Jay Shah
Shah said during his address at the event, “We may have lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. But we won hearts thereby winning 10 matches in a row. I would like to say that I am confident that India will lift the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy at Barbados.”
“Rohit was captaining (in the past and in other formats) and he came back for the Afghanistan series after a year, which means we were going to let him continue forward. Hardik Pandya will definitely be the vice-captain. When Hardik was injured in the World Cup, who else can we give the captaincy? In the third T20I against Afghanistan, India were 22/4 and the way Rohit Sharma took the team to 212/4, we can’t question much about him, right? He has the ability, as I said, we won ten games in the ODI World Cup. We didn’t win the final, but it’s part and parcel of the game. Whoever plays better, wins.”
