‘Ye toh bilkul fixed hai’ – Fans react as reported T20 World Cup 2024 groups go viral on social media

The Telegraph reported earlier today that Australia and England, the defending champions, are in Group B. Meanwhile India, and Pakistan are in Group A. Australia also won the multi-nation competition in 2021 held in the UAE. Twenty teams in all are taking part in the T20 carnival, and they are split up into four groups of five.

Group B will include Namibia, Scotland, and Oman in the same group as the two cricketing giants. On other hand, Group A will include Ireland, Canada, as well as the co-hosts of this tournament, the USA, together with India and Pakistan. 

However, Group D features South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the Netherlands, and Nepal. Group C is made up of co-hosts the West Indies, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Uganda, and Papua New Guinea.

The top two teams from each of the four groups will move on to the Super Eight round of the competition. In that round, the pre-tournament seedings will determine the match-ups. It should be noted that countries in Group B are going to compete in the Caribbean. Whereas teams in Group A are going to play each and every group stage match in the United States.

The only significant white-ball showcase event scheduled for 2024 is the T20 World Cup. Eight T20 World Cups have been staged thus far in the 17-year history of the format. The first one taking place in South Africa in 2007 and the most recent one taking place in Australia in 2022.

India, the inaugural winners of the competition have not been able to win the competition since then. They came close in 2014 but lost to eventual winners Sri Lanka in the final. Since then, they have made the semi-finals on two occasions, both times losing to the winners of the tournament.

Reported groups for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in June

Group A: India, Pakistan, USA, Canada and Ireland.

Group B: England, Australia, Namibia, Scotland and Oman.

Group C: New Zealand, West Indies, Uganda, Afghanistan and Papua New Guinea.

Group D: South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Netherlands and Nepal.
