‘He can do what Rohit Sharma did in ODI World Cup 2023’ – Former Team India batter praises young Yashasvi Jaiswal
Sanjay Manjrekar and Sunil Gavaskar did not not shy away from heaping praise on the Team India opener
Sanjay Manjrekar, the former batter, praised Yashasvi Jaiswal. Manjrekar spoke about the rising phenomenon, as the secret to India’s success in the T20Is. After an incredible two to three years on the domestic circle, Jaiswal has embraced international cricket with ease. Playing from the outset in an aggressive style reminiscent of Virender Sehwag, Jaiswal has given Team India quick starts in the limited format.
Sanjay Manjrekar spoke on Star Sports about the potential of Yashasvi Jaiswal. He said, “India can field another T20I team that can compete against other international teams and that’s basically what IPL has done. If India is looking to reinvent their approach, Yashasvi Jaiswal could be the man for India. He can do what Rohit Sharma did in the ODI World Cup 2023 for India.”
Unfortunately, the first Twenty20 International in Durban was called off owing to non stop rain, thus Jaiswal was unable to show off his abilities to the South African crowd. With a strike rate of 163.71, the 21-year-old averages 33.63 and has scored two half-centuries and a century in 13 Twenty20 Internationals.
Though he had shown potential in earlier IPL seasons, this year was the 21-year-old’s breakout season. With a strike rate of 163.61 and an average of 48.08, the southpaw tallied 625 runs.
Jaiswal’s century off 49 deliveries in the quarterfinal match against Nepal was crucial to India’s victory at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. During the trip to the West Indies, he also made his Test debut, scoring an incredible 171 in his opening innings.
“Jaiswal is an all-format prospect for India” : Sunil Gavaskar
Similar to Sanjay Manjrekar, Indian veteran Sunil Gavaskar commended Yashasvi Jaiswal. He was also in awe of his aggressive and free-flowing batting in the shortest format.
The former Team India opener said, “The way he started off against Jofra Archer in the IPL was impressive. He is a very very good talent. Jaiswal brings the left-handedness as well in the top order. He has the freshness of not being tied down by experience. He sees the ball and hits the ball. Jaiswal is an all-format prospect for India.”
