‘Outrageous’ – Twitter thrilled as Laura Wolvaardt powers Velocity to an emphatic win over Supernovas
Velocity won by seven wickets
Supernovas and Velocity locked horns in the second game of the Women’s T20 Challenge at the MCA Stadium in Pune. The Purple Brigade won the toss and elected to field first. They had a great start as Priya Punia (4) was caught by Ayabonga Khaka off Kate Cross in the first over. In the third over, Harleen Deol (7) was caught by Laura Wolvaardt off Kate Cross.
Skipper Deepti Sharma took the wicket of Deandra Dottin (6) who was caught behind by Yastika Bhatia in the fourth over. At 18/3, opposition skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and wicketkeeper batter Taniya Bhatia stitched a partnership of 82 runs in 10.3 overs. At 100/3, Bhatia (36 off 32) was run out by the combination of Khaka and Yastika Bhatia. Kaur scored 71 off 52 balls including seven fours and three sixes.
She yorked herself facing Radha Yadav as the former was trying to retain the strike for the last over of the innings. However, the skipper of Supernovas was clean bowled. Sune Luus (20* off 14) who came out to bat after Taniya Bhatia’s wicket, helped the team reach the total of 150/5. For the Deepti Sharma-led team, Kate Cross took two wickets while the skipper herself and Radha Yadav took one each.
In reply, Velocity had a poor start as their opening batter Natthakan Chantham (1) was caught at covers by Kaur off Pooja Vastrakar in the second over. Yastika Bhatia (17 off 13) came and stitched a partnership of 63 runs in 6.1 overs before the former was clean bowled by Dottin. Shafali Varma scored 51 off 33 balls before including nine fours and a six.
She was caught by Kaur off Dotting in the 10th over of the innings with the scorecard reading 80 runs. At this stage, skipper Deepti Sharma and Laura Wolvaardt stitched an unbeaten partnership of 71 runs. Sharma scored almost a run-a-ball 24 including two fours. On the other hand, Wolvaardt dominated the opposition bowling attack with 51 off 35 balls including seven fours and a six. The team went on to win the game by seven wickets and 10 balls to spare.

Despite the insistence that the new tournament records being set are a sign of how far the game has developed, they're mainly due to this being the 11th match in the history of the Women's T20 Challenge.
