In the 35th match of the Indian Premier League 2023, Mumbai Indians faced defending champions Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With some dominating team performance, Gujarat took revenge for their last year’s loss as they beat MI by 55 runs. Mumbai failed to chase 207 runs as they were restricted to 152/9 in 20 overs.

Earlier, after winning the toss, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma opted to bowl first and called Hardik Pandya’s GT to bat first. Batting first, GT got a shaky start as opener Wriddhiman Saha was dismissed by young Arjun Tendulkar in the third over of the game. After his dismissal, GT’s top order failed to capitalize on the opportunity as they were four down for 101 in 12.2 overs.  Only Shubman Gill did well as he scored 56 runs in 34 balls.

After that, South Africa batter, David Miller, along with young Abhinav Manohar, added 71 runs for the fifth wicket. Their partnership helped GT to post a massive total of 207/6 in 20 overs. Miller, in his innings, scored 46 runs off 22 balls with the help of four sixes and two boundaries. Meanwhile, Manohar, in his innings, smashed 42 runs off 21 balls with the help of three boundaries and as many sixes.

In the end, Rahul Tewatia hammered 20 runs off 5 balls to help GT cross 200 run mark. Arjun Tendulkar proved to be the best bowler for MI as he just gave nine runs and clinched a wicket in two overs. Apart from him, Piyush Chawla, Riley Meredith, Kumar Kartikeya and Jason Behrendroff clinched wickets too.

Mumbai Indians crumbled against the Afghani spin duo

Chasing 208, SRH got a terrible start as opener Rohit Sharma failed to score runs and was dismissed for 2 runs off eight balls. His partner Ishan Kishan, along with Camron Green, added 39 runs off 33 balls. Their slow batting approach created pressure and it harmed MI’s run chase. Soon., they were pushed back with 59-5 in 10.2 overs. Afghani spin duo Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmed troubled MI’s batting lineup as they clinched five wickets together.

In the 8th over of the game, Rashid dismissed both Ishan Kishan and Tilak Verma in the span of three balls. Their dismissal not only pushed MI’s run chase back but would have harmed their confidence too. In the 11th over, Noor Ahmed took on the opportunity and dismissed both Camron Green and Tilak Verma in the span of three balls. Green, in his innings, scored 33 runs off 26 balls. After his departure, Suryakumar Yadav tried to rescue his team with a quick 23 runs off 12 balls, however, he was dismissed by Noor in his last over.

In the end, Nehal Wadhera tried to create some difference as he scored 40 runs off 21 balls with the help of three sixes and as many boundaries. He was dismissed by Mohit Sharma after hammering him for 16 runs in his last over. Notably, Noor Ahmed and Rashid Khan proved to be star bowlers for GT as they clinched five wickets together. Skipper Hardik Pandya and Mohit also clinched a wicket each. This is Mumbai’s fourth loss in seven games and they are 8th on the points table with six points.
