The top spinner for India, Kuldeep Yadav, has been benched for the first One-Day International match against Sri Lanka at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. In the absence of the left-arm chinaman, Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal will be in charge of India’s spin attack.

The change has come even though he won the player of the match in the last match that he played for India. In the first Test of the series against Bangladesh, Kuldeep took eight wickets and scored 40 runs in the game as India registered a massive 227-run win.

In addition, India also has left two other star players from its playing XI. Despite scoring a double century in his final ODI for India, Ishan Kishan was not given a spot in the team. Star batter Suryakumar Yadav could not find a place in the team either. In the past year, the 32-year-old has excelled in the game’s shortest format.

On the other hand, KL Rahul, who has been out of form for quite some time, has been named as the team’s wicketkeeper. Fans have expressed their displeasure for leaving out the prime spinner out of the team.

“Phehaps selection criteria has been changed now, if you perform, you’ll be benched. Player’s chances to be in playing XI is directly proporsonal to how bad batting/bowling form he has. Examples: Kuldeep Yadav (got only one test in Bangladesh and took 8 wickets out of 20),” a user wrote.

“What’s going on? those are performing are not being considered. Same thing happened with Kuldeep Yadav. Shame!” another user wrote.
