Kane Williamson, the skipper of the New Zealand cricket team, who was a part of the Hyderabad franchise in the Indian T20 League, was released by the team on November 15, Tuesday when they announced the retention list for the upcoming edition of the contest.

The New Zealand batter eventually played only for one franchise in the league and eventually, the batter went on to represent the franchise in 76 matches. To add more to his stint with the Hyderabad team, Williamson scored 2101 runs for the team since 2015 at an average of 36.22 and with the best score of 89.

The right-handed batter was criticised for his cautious approach in the 20-20 World Cup 2022 and faced the wrath of his haters with the Kiwis eventually crashing out of the multinational tournament in the semis against Babar Azam’s Pakistan.

It wasn’t a surprise: Kane Williamson

Williamson, who said that it was not a surprise for him when the franchise released him, claimed that it was wonderful playing for the team and added that the league works in such a way that players get released at some point in time or the other.

“There are a lot of competitions around the world, and the Indian T20 League is certainly an amazing completion to be a part of. You see players play for different teams all the time. There are a lot of options, lot of cricket, so for me, I love playing all formats,” Williamson was quoted as saying.

“That’s the way it goes, I had a really enjoyable time at Hyderabad, I have a lot of fond memories. It wasn’t a surprise when it [retention list] was officially released,” said the Black Caps captain further when asked about the team.

With the mini-auction set to take place on December 23, in Kochi, teams would be hoping to get rope the player into their squad and have him on the side as a captaincy option. As things stand, the Chennai franchise are more likely to get him in given that the team need a captain post-MS Dhoni’s departure.
