Commonwealth Games 2022
Achinta Sheuli wins third Gold medal for India in the CWG 2022
This is India’s third Gold Medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Games
India has won its third Gold Medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Games after Mirabai Chanu and Jeremy Lalrinnunga. Notably, all three Gold medals have come in weightlifting, with Chanu winning in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event. Jeremy, on the other hand, won in the men’s 67 kg category. Once again, the Indian contingent saw one of its players winning a Gold medal.
Achinta Sheuli won the highest prize in the 73kg men’s finals. The 20-year-old broke the Games record by lifting a total of 313kg on July 31. Earlier on the same day, Jeremy lifted 300kg. The latter wouldn’t have thought that his record would stay only for a few hours. Meanwhile, after the win, Sheuli said that it wasn’t easy for him to make a proper lift after the second attempt but his coach motivated him
“It was not easy, but somehow I made it easy as I was not able to make a proper lift on my second attempt, there was tough fight after that. Vijay sir was telling me to do better, I tried my best,” Sheuli said in an exclusive interview with NDTV.
The new weightlifting star revealed that his mother has stopped the work of tailoring which she used to do all day. In the end, the Gold medalist dedicated his win to his brother who has always supported him.
“My mother has left tailoring now, earlier she used to do it from morning to night. I also used to do it. I want to dedicate this medal to my brother as he always supports me. There was pressure as Sanket Sargar had won a medal,” he added.
Notably, Sheuli was the contender to win the Gold medal. He competed in the final against the likes of Malaysia’s Erry Hidayat Muhammad and Canada’s Shad Darsigny. Muhammad gave a tough competition to Achinta with a lift of 303kg. Darsigny, on the other hand, was third with a total lift of 298kg.
