ODI World Cup 2023

‘Abb Tak gussa hai pichle match ke liye’ – Fans react as Kusal Mendis refuses to congratulate Virat Kohli for his 49th ODI ton

Team India batter Virat Kohli went level with Sachin Tendulkar in terms of ODI centuries earlier today.

Kusal Mendis, the stand-in skipper for Sri Lanka, made an odd comment following Virat Kohli’s 49th century in an ODI during the November 5 encounter involving India and South Africa.

On his 35th birthday, Kohli struck his 49th One Day International (ODI) hundred at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 game against South Africa. With this accomplishment, he was able to tie the record for the most ODI hundreds held by the late great batsman Sachin Tendulkar.

A valiant performance on a shifting wicket in sweltering heat culminated in Kohli’s century. With ten fours in 127 balls, he scored 101 runs. With his fourth ODI World Cup century, Kohli now stands as India’s third-highest century achiever. He is trailing only SachinTendulkar as well as Rohit Sharma. In addition, it was his second hundred in this ODI World Cup.

Given that this accomplishment took place on the same pitch where Kohli scored his first international century versus Sri Lanka in 2009, it is very notable. After Tendulkar was bowled out that day, he had come out to bat and partnered with another centurion Gautam Gambhir to make a match-winning partnership of 224 runs.

Kusal Mendis’ bizarre response to King Kohli’s 49th Hundred!

Mendis was informed by the press conference organisers prior to the Sri Lanka vs. Bangladesh match in Delhi that Kohli had surpassed Tendulkar’s milestone of 49 one-day international hundreds.

The interim Sri Lankan captain would chuckle and appear a little perplexed before inquiring as to why the claimed person would compliment the outstanding batsman on his accomplishment. He said, “Why I would congratulate him?”

Even while the captain of Sri Lanka may have opted not to applaud Kohli, Tendulkar did not waste any time in praising the brilliant batsman. The former Team India batter wrote, “Well played Virat. It took me 365 days to go from 49 to 50 earlier this year. I hope you go from 49 to 50 and break my record in the next few days. Congratulations!!.”
