Shreyas Iyer

India and Kolkata player, Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the ongoing Indian T20 League 2023. Before the tournament, he was believed to play some part in the league. However, now, Iyer is said to be traveling overseas to get his operated on. It all started in January this year, he was ruled out of the ODI series against New Zealand due to back issues.

The right-hander then made his comeback in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023. In the fourth and last game of the series, the Mumbaikar didn’t come out to bat as his back problems resurfaced again. As a result, he was ruled out of the forthcoming ODI series which the Men In Blue lost. After this, Iyer was ruled out for the first few games of the 16th season of the biggest T20 League.

On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer is also ruled out of the Test Championship final. India will play the summit clash against Australia in June this year.

Nitish Rana will now lead Kolkata in the absence of Shreyas Iyer

Ahead of the ongoing season, the two-time winners appointed Nitish Rana as their skipper. They were hoping for his return of Iyer in the tournament. However, no that is out of the window.

“While we are hopeful that Shreyas will recover and participate at some stage in the IPL 2023 edition, we feel fortunate that Nitish, with the captaincy experience of having led his state side in white-ball cricket and the IPL experience he has had with KKR since 2018, will do a great job,” KKR said in a statement. “We are also confident that under head coach Chandrakant Pandit and the support staff, he will get all the support needed off the field, and the highly experienced leaders in the squad will provide all support that Nitish may need on the field. We wish him the best in his new role and Shreyas a full and speedy recovery.”
