When a viral video emerged of a group of supporters screaming Virat Kohli’s name during the India vs. Nepal Asia Cup 2023 encounter in Sri Lanka, the former Indian cricketer appeared to be on the receiving end. On the internet on Monday, a video of Gambhir being accompanied by a representative went viral.

Because of the viral footage, viewers believed that Gambhir had retaliated against the “Kohli fans” by making an inappropriate gesture. Because of the ‘Kohli-Kohli’ chanting at the game, Gambhir was criticised on social media for lacking his composure.

Gambhir said that certain Pakistan cricket team supporters were upsetting him. On Monday, Gambhir discussed his contentious gesture in the continental competition on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Gautam Gambhir took to twitter to shed light on the video and the news spreading around with his name and face. He said, “A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes. Not everything is as it seems. Any Indian would react how I did to the kind of slogans used against our nation. I love our players & I love my country.”

While India was playing Nepal, Gambhir claimed to news agency ANI that some Pakistani supporters yelled anti-India chants as the former India batsman was exiting the pitch. He said, “What is shown on social media has no truth in it because people show whatever they want to show. There were 2-3 Pakistanis there who were speaking anti-India things and things on Kashmir. So, it was my natural reaction. I can’t hear anything against my country. So, that was my reaction,”

A video showing him making an unpopular gesture towards a group of followers has sparked a political debate in India. On X, previously known as Twitter, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) questioned whether Union Minister Smriti Irani was going to make a fuss over this as she made over a supposed flying kiss gesture made by Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha throughout the monsoon session of Parliament.
