Steve Smith‘s second century in a row propelled the Sydney Sixers to a crushing victory over the Sydney Thunder, cementing their second-place finish on the Big Bash League points table. Smith, who had just scored his first BBL century a few days before, did an encore, finishing unbeaten on 125 and registering his third century in the format.

After the match, former Australian ODI captain Aaron Finch had a special message for the star batter. “Not a bad player this young Smith kid from Sydney, I think he’ll have a big future,” Finch hilariously tweeted.

Despite losing two early wickets, Smith’s knock validated the Sixers’ decision to bat first. Gurinder Sandhu had delivered a double blow in the fourth over, dismissing both Josh Philippe and Kurt Patterson, but that was the only time the Thunder appeared to threaten the Sixers.

Following that, Smith was joined by Moises Henriques, who put on an unbeaten 155-run stand to propel the Sixers to a massive 187. Smith had continued from the previous game, hitting the second ball he faced for a boundary against Sandhu.

The attack continued against Chris Green, who was cut for a boundary, and Daniel Sams, who was slogged over midwicket for a six, giving the Sixers an early advantage. However, Sandhu’s double strike threatened to derail a promising start as the Sixers went through a period of consolidation, going 33 balls without a boundary.

Smith broke out of that rut by slamming Joel Davis straight down for a six and then proceeded to hit Sams for four and six off consecutive balls, bringing him to fifty. Smith raced into the nineties with two sixes off Sandhu before launching Usman Qadir for one more to bring up his hundred, with Henriques providing excellent support.

Thunder were derailed in their chase by Steve O’Keefe’s four-wicket haul, which included the big wicket of David Warner for 16. Thunder suffered their seventh loss of the tournament, despite contributions from Sean Abbott and Ben Dwarshius.
