‘Aaj raat apun khushi mein 2 bje tak piyega’ – Fans ecstatic as MI thrashes LSG in IPL 2023 Eliminator to stay alive in title race
Mumbai Indians will play the defending champions, Gujarat Titans on May 26 in Ahmedabad.
In the Eliminator match of the ongoing IPL 2023, Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants locked horns in Chennai. MI qualified after finishing fourth via winning their last league game against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Also, they had a stroke of luck as Gujarat Titans beat Royal Challengers Bangalore to hand MI a place in the playoffs. On the other hand, LSG entered the last four on their own with 17 points.
Meanwhile, in the game, the five-time winners won the toss and elected to bat first. They had a good start as they got 29/0 in the first three overs. However, the likes of Naveen-ul-Haq and Yash Thakur got rid of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan respectively in the fourth and fifth overs. At 38/2, the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Cameron Green put together 66 runs in six overs.
Naveen got rid of Yadav and Cameron in the 11th over to break the momentum. Only Nehal Wadhera (23), who had to be brought in as an impact sub due to a fall of wickets, could score at a strike rate of 191.66. Apart from this, Tilak Verma and Tim David almost played run-a-ball. In the end, the former champions could get to 182/8.
For the Super Giants, Haq took four wickets while Yash Thakur took three.
Lucknow Super Giants lose the second Eliminator in their history
In reply, the Krunal Pandya-led side had a poor start as they lost two wickets for 23 runs. At this stage, the likes of skipper and Kyle Mayers were going well and put together 46 runs. However, MI’s highest wicket-taker this season, Piyush Chawla got rid of Pandya. On the other hand, Akash Madhwal took two back-to-back wickets to break the back of the chase.
Things got worse when Marcus Stoinis (40) who was going well, got run out and the team was reduced to 89/6. Their slightest chance was ended when Krishnappa Gowtham was run out by Sharma in the 13th over. LSG ended up losing the game by 81 runs. Madhwal completed his five-wicket haul with the last wicket and his spell read 3.3-0-5-5.
