‘Aagya swad, Aakash Chopra?’ – Fans react as Shubman Gill replaces out-of-form KL Rahul in Test 3 of BGT

India lead the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series 2-0 after win in Nagpur and Delhi.

Shubman Gill replaces KL Rahul

India are leading the 4-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series 2-0 after registering wins in the first two tests of the series in Nagpur and Delhi. Although India registered comfortable wins, KL Rahul remained a thorn in the India side with his miserable form with the willow in the red-ball game. The recently married batter scored 20, 17, and 1 in the three times that he batted in the BGT series against Australia.

As such, fans and pundits were quick to extend their views on the situation. Among the many opinions flooding the Internet, the Twitter war between former India speedster Venkatesh Prasad and cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra gained a lot of traction among the fans. When Shubman Gill was announced in India’s Playing XI for the third BGT Test in place of KL Rahul, fans were quick to take a dig at Aakash Chopra who backed KL Rahul and engaged in a fiery word battle with Prasad who was vocal about his criticism of Rahul.

Shubman Gill got out for 21 in the first innings

Although a lot of hope was riding on Shubman Gill to make the most out of his chance, he could not impress much in the first innings of the Indore Test. He got out for 21 off 18 balls after Matthew Kuhnemann found Gill’s outside edge, the catch was completed by captain Steve Smith fielding in the slips. Notably, Gill’s meagre score of 21 is still more than Rahul’s highest score of 20 in the series.

At the end of 11 overs, India are struggling at 44-4 with Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer at the crease for the Men in Blue. Notably, the ongoing BGT series is India’s last chance to book a place in the final of the Test Championships to be played at the Oval between 7 and 11 June 2023. The equation for India was to win 3-0 or 3-1 at least to qualify, making the ongoing Indore Test a crucial one.

Here’s how fans reacted to Gill’s inclusion in the Playing XI:
