5 times Australian cricketers were accused of not being disciplined

Australia is arguably the greatest cricket nation on the planet; they certainly have trophies to prove that. While the nation continues to produce exceptional talent there are times when the Aussie players land themselves in embarrassing controversies.

Let’s look at five times Australian cricketers were accused of being undisciplined and faced proper punishment for their actions.

Ricky Ponting

Even Australia’s greatest captain Ricky Ponting has been marred by many controversies throughout his career.  Probably his lowest point however was in 1999 when the right-hand batter was thrown out of the Equinox disco at the Peerless Hotel in Kolkata after trying to crash a party there. Ponting went into a scuffle with security and came out with a bruised eye. The three times World Cup winner was later fined by Cricket Australia.

In an incident that shook the entirety of the cricket world, the Australian team were caught on camera cheating. The 2018 Sandpaper scandal where Cameron Bancroft was seen roughing up one side of the ball is among the biggest of scandals in cricket history. Captain Steve Smith and David Warner were banned for knowing about the sandpaper while Bancroft was banned for doing it. The then coach Darren Lehman also resigned following criticism.

Andrew Symonds

Former Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds was known to live a flashy life outside of cricket. Symonds have been reprimanded on many occasions due to his poor discipline. At the 2009 20-20 World Cup, for example, the Australian all-rounder was sent back home from England for breaking a number of rules relating to alcohol.

Shane Warne

The legendary Australian cricketer Shane Warne has one of the biggest statures in World Cricket. The former cricketer, however, has had his fair share of controversies as well. in 2000 for example Warne admitted to having ‘a bit of dirty talk on the phone’ with British nurse Donna Wright. The player was then stripped of his vice-captaincy as a result of lewd phone call allegations.

Tim Paine is the latest Australian player to be marred in an embarrassing scandal. The wicketkeeper batter was accused of sending lewd messages to a female employee at Cricket Tasmania. Following the allegations, Paine was asked to step down from captaincy and went on an indefinite break.
