IPL holders Chennai Super Kings recently released their list of retained and released players ahead of the IPL 2024 player auction. Just like their tradition (for the mini-auction), they have retained most of their players, and let go of a few. Even though most of the core squad is assembled, let’s have a look at five players whom they will target during the auction.

5. Gerald Coetzee

The right-arm pacer made his name during the ODI World Cup 2023 as he was one of the leading for South Africa. He was the replacement for Anrich Nortje for the tournament. Notably, Coetzee plays for CSK’s subsidiaries – Texas and Joburg Super Kings. Chennai might also go for him given their lack of fast bowling resources.

The Afghanistan all-rounder was a revelation for his team during the World Cup, including the innings of 97 against South Africa. Apart from this, he bowled well with the new ball in some of the games. An all-rounder has always been in demand in the cash-rich league.

If the team doesn’t get the services of Coetzee, they can go for the New Zealand who has been released by the Kolkata Knight Riders. He has played for a few teams such as KKR and 2022 winners, Gujarat Titans. As discussed, the Yellow Brigade, Super Kings lacks fast bowling resources which they can fill with Ferguson on board.

The left-arm leg-spinner was one of the leading wicket-takers during the CPL 2023 season a few months back. His team, Trinbago Knight Riders reached the final, losing to first-time winners, Guyana Amazon Warriors. Notably, Waqar played for Mumbai Indians’ subsidiaries, MI Emirates, MI New York, and MI Cape Town.

The left-arm pacer from the Caribbean played for Rajasthan Royals in the last two seasons and has been released by the team. Given his ability to change his pace and bowl at the death, McCoy might be targeted by the five-time winners during the auction.
