One of the biggest carnivals, the Commonwealth Games are knocking on the doors of the sporting fraternity and will kick off on July 28 (Friday) within a week. Speaking from the perspective of the Indian contingent, then it undoubtedly ranks among the strongest contingents in the CWG. India has fine chances of finishing at podiums in numerous events at Birmingham so have the weightlifters of India.

They will surely eye on to increase the number from a total of 125 medals won by former athletes in the last couple of editions. India emerged as the best contingent in terms of weightlifting twice, first in 1990 and the second time in the last edition of 2018 at Gold Coast.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga (Men’s 67 kg)

The 19-year-old young lad has won three gold medals in Commonwealth Youth Championships, Commonwealth Junior Championships and Youth Olympics in 2017 and Gold Coast and Buenos Aires respectively. Other than these golds, he also bagged a silver medal in 2016 at IWF Youth World Championship in Penang.

The Aizawal-based prodigy will surely be in contention for a medal in CWG 2022 in Birmingham. He has also a record of lifting a massive weight of 305 kg in the previous year’s Commonwealth Championships. He will eye on to cross the mark of his personal best of 306 kg to grab the medal at the Birmingham Games.

Achinta Sheuli (Men’s 73 kg)

The West Bengal-born teenager has emerged as a finding in weightlifting for India.  He won the qualification for the Commonwealth Games of 2022 after winning a gold medal in the Commonwealth Championships of 2021 last year.

He has also the silver medal in his respective category which he won at the World Junior Championships. Sheuli also went on to break three records at the national level. Sheuli is also among the individuals in the game who might clinch a medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022.

Mirabai Chanu (Women’s 49 kg)

The 2022 Tokyo Olympics silver medalist will be the prime headline in the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games. Mirabai Chanu is definitely eyeing finishing on the highest spot of the podium in weightlifting at Birmingham.

She grabbed the gold medal last time when Commonwealth Games were played on the Gold Coast in 2018. The 27-year-old is among the top contenders for the medal from the Indian contingent.

Ajay Singh (Men’s 81 kg)

Ajay Singh also made it to the Birmingham Games after clinching a gold in the Commonwealth Championships of 2021 last year. His compatriots Jeremy and Achinta accompanied him in the tally of gold medal winners.

Ajay bagged a bronze during 2017 in the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships respectively. It was the time when his category was 77 kg. He is pretty sure to finish on top if he carries away his last performances with some improvements.

Purnima Pandey (Women’s 87 kg)

Pandey is also among potential medal winners for India at Birmingham in CWG 2022. She has amazed everyone with her stunning outings on the Indian circuit. The 18-year-old young girl went on to create a massive number of eight national records at the Tashkent Championships of 2021.

The Varanasi-based prodigy clinched the gold after lifting 229 kg in the same event. It also helped him qualify straight for the Commonwealth Games of 2022.
